Review: Bat Cave Waterfall (蝙蝠洞瀑布)

Bat Cave Waterfall (蝙蝠洞瀑布)

Bat Cave Waterfall (蝙蝠洞瀑布) is the second waterfall I’ve visited in Tainan. It is about an hours drive from Tainan City. This one is really easy to visit and access, which also means it attracts some foot traffic. When I was there I saw a couple leaving just as I had arrived and while I was about to leave a group of friends showed up. So if you’re looking for something more private then this isn’t the best waterfall for you.

The drive from Tainan City to the Bat Cave Waterfall was really quite stunning. You slowly climb the mountains from the plains of Tainan and enter a valley in between the mountains. On the drive you’ll see thousands of mango trees. Off in the distance are some moon rocks, one of my favorite sights in Taiwan.

For the adventurous, this waterfall isn’t much of a challenge. My impression is that it is a good place to take a date or to stop by if you are in the Nanxi District (楠西區) and wanting to catch some of the sights. It is definitely beautiful, but if you’re wanting to spend a day swimming and relaxing by the water I would recommend a different place.

Directions:

FollowXiaoFei has the Google Maps directions to the Bat Cave Waterfall (蝙蝠洞瀑布). Open the link and it will take you directly to the cave. I would not suggest taking a car or vehicle up the road to the waterfall. The road is narrow and it might be difficult to turn around when you need to leave. If you’re in a car, it’s probably best if you park at the bottom of the hill and walk the rest of the way.

When you see this restroom, you’ve arrived. You can park your scooter on the side of the road and begin walking towards the waterfall. Look for the marker that points the way.

Here’s an old sign below the marker. I’m not sure what it says. I didn’t try cleaning it to see what’s under the algae.

Stick to the right on this path. It is mostly dry all the way to the waterfall.

Review

This is one of my favorite places in Taiwan and it’s super easy to get to. You are able to drive the entire way there and then walk a short distance to the waterfall. Along the way you’ll see some amazing scenery. I definitely need to go back and climb to the top of the waterfall to check out some of the pools.

Recommendation: Must Visit
