How to get to Tainan from Taoyuan Airport

When I landed at the Taipei Taoyuan International Airport for my study abroad program in Tainan, I had to figure out how to get to Tainan from Taipei. Some of the students flew into the Kaohsiung International Airport, which is closer to Tainan, but the tickets for that flight were much more expensive. At the start of the trip down, I made the mistake of buying the wrong high-speed rail ticket. Avoid that mistake by pre-purchasing your HSR Ticket here and get a 20% discount! So in order to help fellow travelers avoid my mistake, this post will give you a step-by-step guide to get to Tainan from Taipei.

Arrival:

1. When you arrive at TPE, you need to walk to Airport Terminal 2 Station.
2. Take the Airport Terminal from Jichang Line to Huanbei Station.
3. Exit at the Taoyuan HSR Station.

Taoyuan HSR Station:

1. At the Taoyuan HSR Station, buy an HSR ticket from HSR Taoyuan Station (even though you landed at TPE, you are technically in Taoyuan) to HSR Tainan Station.
2. Take the HSR south to Zuoying.
3. Exit at the Tainan HSR Station.

Tainan HSR Station:

1. The Tainan HSR Station is located outside of Tainan City which means you need to buy a ticket for the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA).
2. Buy a TRA ticket from Shalun Station to Tainan Station.
3. Exit at Tainan Station.

Alternative Route

You can also get to Tainan from Taipei by using the Taiwan Railway Administration. This route is cheaper, but also slower. It does have the added benefit of not having to change from the HSR to the TRA.

Arrival:

1. When you arrive at TPE, you need to walk to Airport Terminal 2 Station.
2. Take the Airport Terminal from Jichang Line to Taipei Main Station.
3. Exit at the Taipei Main Station.

Taipei Main Station:

1. Walk to the Taipei Station.
2. Buy a ticket from Taipei Station to Chaozhou.
3. Exit at Tainan Station.
